Notes: Tesla loves to burn off some energy with his pal Beetlejuice. He is a very sweet and gentle dog that prefers adults over kids. He is typically a couch potato but loves his tennis balls. He walks well on a leash but has been known to prefer short walks over long walks, although he is good for a few throws of fetch. He loves belly rubs, ear scratches and soft blankets. He has proven to be a great player in the yard with other dogs but not so great with cats. He is mostly house trained which is great for the shelter. 3 years old and roughly 50 pounds, microchipped.

Adoption fee for a dog is $100 (cash or check, non-refundable). Fee includes spay/neuter surgery, first vaccines including Rabies, worming, flea treatment and for dogs a microchip. All animals are spayed/neutered when old enough.
To adopt you must be at least 18 years of age and provide a current ID. You must complete an Adoption Application form and pass reference checks before you can take a dog home. See the Adoption Information here. Most of our dogs are strays, therefore we can only guess whether they are good with other animals or children by observing the behavior of the animal in the kennel and their interaction with the shelter staff.- Dogs can be adopted out of state with the proper identification required (see below), unless they have not been spayed/neutered, in which case they are restricted to residents of Mason and adjacent counties (Mason, Cabell, Putnam, Jackson County). West Virginia law requires that all dogs and cats adopted from the animal shelter are spayed/neutered.
- To adopt a dog you must be 18 years of age or older.
- You must provide a picture ID with a current address at the time of the adoption.
- Each pet is required to be vaccinated for rabies within seven days of adoption, if it is four months of age or older. Rabies vaccination is required for each pet, upon turning four months of age.
- Every new owner of a pet adopted from Mason County Animal Shelter shall have the pet sterilized within thirty days of the pet turning six months of age, or within thirty days if the pet is over six months of age.
- Out of state adoptions must be spayed or neutered before leaving West Virginia.
- Return of the proper paperwork (sterilization and rabies certificates) is required within seven days of sterilization.
- State law requires that all dogs and cats be vaccinated for rabies.

Do not forget to bring your pets inside when it is too cold outside. IF IT IS TOO COLD FOR YOU, IT IS TOO COLD FOR THEM! The law says: During cold weather, a dog shelter must have a windbreak at its entrance and have bedding material that is sufficient to protect the animal from cold and promote the retention of body heat.
